Objectives The project aims to empower vulnerable smallholder farmers of existing cocoa plantations in Cote d’Ivoire, enabling them to enhance their resilience against the negative impacts of climate change through piloting the Adaptation Benefits Mechanism (ABM).

EXPECTED RESULTS

  • Expected to mobilize at least US$ 1 million new finance for replication of the project in Cote d’Ivoire and at least three other cocoa producing countries in the region through the ABM within 2 years.
  • Expected to deliver a fully operational ABM for the cocoa sector and the international community.

KEY ACTIVITIES

  • Workshops and training on the ABM and adaptation, distribution of seeds packages and stakeholder consultations (Phase I - completed) .
  • Delivery of an ABM methodology for this project type for broader use in the Cocoa sector and ABM guidelines and tools for project developers (Phase I - completed).
  • Resource mobilization through the ABM (Phase II – yet to start).
  • Preparation and dissemination of knowledge materials on the ABM and the project (Phase I and II - ongoing).

Key Achievements or Progress

The first phase of the project was completed in the period 2019-2023, including the implementation of adaptation measures and the preparation of an ABM methodology for the cocoa sector. The impact of the measures is expected to enfold in the next 2-10 years. The second phase will start end 2023 and would be completed within 2 years. It will aim to mobilize at least US$ 1 million for replication of the project in Cote d’Ivoire and the region through the ABM and deliver a fully operational ABM for the cocoa sector and the international community.

THE KEY PROJECTED RESULTS THUS FAR

  • Implemented measures to enhance the resilience of 400 smallholder cocoa farmers in Soubre and Vavua to the negative impacts of climate change-induced raising temperatures, seasonal and precipitation variability and improve the situation of women and youth through resilient, sustainable and zero-deforestation agroforestry measures within 2-10 years.
  • Prepared a first-of-a-kind ABM methodology for applying a package of agroforestry measures to enhance the resilience of smallholder cocoa farmers affected by climate change and followed the ABM activity cycle.
  • Delivered a set of key guidelines and tools for ABM project developers for all adaptation areas, including for the cocoa sector.
